Bunting Award

Honoring the late Ken Bunting, a founding WCOG board member, executive editor of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and director of the National Freedom of Information Coalition, this annual award highlights exceptional journalistic work that supports and demonstrates the importance open government.

There are many ways by which journalistic work can support and demonstrate the importance of open government laws. Among these are:

  • Reporting important stories that could not have been written without use of the Public Records Act, Open Public Meetings Act or other open government laws.
  • Reporting stories that expressly mention the use of the Public Records Act, Open Public Meetings Act or another open government laws, or otherwise makes such use apparent.
  • Reporting stories that illuminate instances in which government openness, accountability and transparency serve the public interest, including actions in support of open government by public officials or members of the general public.
  • Aggressively using open government laws to gain access to public records and meetings.
  • Bringing to light instances in which public information or access is inappropriately withheld by government.
  • Showing persistence, especially against resistance, in gaining access to public records and meetings.
  • Pursuing legal action in response to government attempts to inappropriately block access records and meetings.
  • Producing commentary that informs the public about important issues concerning government openness, transparency and accountability.
